Doman, David Mark 6/27/1951 - 7/29/2020 Ann Arbor, Michigan David Mark Doman, age 69, passed away on July 29, 2020 at the University of Michigan Hospital. He had been living with myleofibrosis, a bone marrow condition that results in too many platelets, for more than thirty years. In the end he succumbed to kidney and heart damage caused by his underlying condition. He was born in Syracuse, NY on June 27, 1951 to David T. and Joan Shelley Doman. The family relocated to Ann Arbor in 1955 when David started working at Ford. Coming from an engineering family, Mark's mechanical interests were sparked as a child, staging fiery wrecks of his toy cars and building soapbox derby cars. The cabin on Burt Lake was central to the family's passion for the outdoors including hiking, boating, and skiing. He studied mechanical engineering and rowed at Cornell University. He returned to Ann Arbor for graduate studies and helped found U of M's men's crew team. During that time he joined U of M's Society of Les Voyageurs, an outdoors club on the Huron River, with which Mark remained active until his death. After graduate school, Mark taught skiing at Aspen Snowmass in the winter and spent summers working in Ann Arbor until he moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. There he founded a snowmaking company and built systems for Alta ski area and the 1988 Calgary Olympics. He hired Jane Allen, a young lawyer to file the incorporation documents. The two were married in 1984 and had two daughters, Christine and Genevieve. The family went skiing in the Wasatch Mountains, camping in Southern Utah, and sailing on the Great Salt Lake. He went on to work for Arrow Dynamics designing roller coasters such as the Magnum at Cedar Point. Later he designed ski lifts for Leitner-Poma. He happily returned to Ann Arbor with his family in 2003 when he went to work for the State of Michigan as the Chief Regulatory Engineer of the state's Ski & Amusement Safety Division. After retiring from the State of Michigan in 2016 he continued doing engineering on small renewable energy projects. He enjoyed spending Saturday mornings at the old car garage in Ypsilanti with the Society for the Preservation of Points and Condensers. Until recently he served on the boards of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Ann Arbor and the Society of Les Voyageurs. Despite his illness, he was always tough as nails and never wanted anyone to know when he wasn't feeling well. Peritoneal dialysis gave him a new lease on life and the last three years were a gift. He was able to sail the North Channel of Lake Huron, ski in Utah, and travel to northern Italy last year. In 2016 he moved back to his childhood home on Thornoaks Drive, where he enjoyed the lovely view on South Pond. He was always up to new things, but was more interested in what you were up to. He was always enthusiastic and generous, and assumed the best about everyone. He is survived by his wife, children, aunt Betty Doman, and siblings.
